My Typical Daily Path

Image
Gidden's theory that everyone has a regular path in their daily lives is absolutely true. This year I have noticed it more and more because of the strict schedule I have made for myself throughout the week. I have always believed that everything happens for a reason and I think that spatial patterns relate and influence this immensely.  My everyday spatial pattern is driving down Broad Street in the mornings for my classes and on the way back I like to drive up Monument Road in Richmond. There is always lots of traffic on Broad street considering it is the Main Street in the city of Richmond. Therefore, it is always lively, people are out walking, running their own errands or going to work. That is my main route everyday especially because I live off campus so if id like to go to classes or see any of my friends I must take this path.  This past month or so there have been many things that have co...

Cities Addressing Climate Change

Image
First of all the main powerhouse that is extremely involved with Climate Change and making efforts to help this cause is the United Nations. "There have been 21 United Nations Climate change conferences to which the intergovernmental panel on clime change reports." This is great news considering there needs to be change and it needs to happen quick. The main issue is that people don't listen nor believe in so called climate change.  The city I will be focusing on that has put lots of efforts into climate change is San Fransisco. " Since 2008, each of the city’s scores of departments has been required to submit climate action plans; ecological regulations across the city’s myriad layers of government have been centralized in the 26 chapters of  San Francisco’s environment cod e." They have been dedicated to deal with a solution of how to prevent arsenic treated wood and construction debris to prevent pollution. Their policies for climate change have made the...

Japan Election & China Election

Image
I will be exploring and comparing the election in Japan in 2021 and Chinas last election in 2021. Japan is a core country and China is a semi-periphery country. The Japanese election is a general election which means " Voting took place in all constituencies  in order to elect members  to the House of  Representatives, the lower  house of the Nation Diet ." This election also decided who the next prime minister would be and cabinet. There is an option to re-appoint the prime minster but in this 2021 election that did not happen. The new leader that was appointed was  Fumio Kishida . This past year was monumental for Japans election because it was "the first general election of the Reiwa era." The meaning behind this era is order and harmony. Japan has made 247 era names to honor their emperors. China on the other hand has a different way of electing their officials. Xi Jinping ...

Immigration in the U.S. and the E.U

Image
The United States and The European Union both have had issues with immigration for decades. The United States major has always been a country that migrants want to come too. "The American dream" as some would say is what people strive to have who are foreign to the United States. The U.S. has fluctuated with the increase and decrease of immigration since 1970 when there was barely fourteen million immigrants that made up the U.S. Then 1890 hits an escalate in numbers, there was about fifteen percent of immigrants that took up the U.S. population. Now as of today immigrants take up fourteen percent of America. The issue is not that everyone wants to come and live in the U.S. it is that most of them are doing it illegally, which has been a controversy for years. This number of undocumented immigrants has only increased over the years which is one of the U.S. biggest concern because of the effect it has on the economy and the safety of every day U.S. citizens. The...

Borders (GEO230) - Grace Knicely

Image
Borders change all of the time. This can happen from war, treaties over land, violence or peaceful trading.  The states borders I have chosen to research is China. This country has been the worlds largest exporter since the beginning of 2009, so there has been lots of change with their borders over the years. In the late 1800s Chinese ports were closed off to Western traders but then had no choice but to open the ports to trade. Then there was a shift in waters "a fter the mid-19th century, there was a sea change in what was systematically recorded about China’s imports and exports (Keller)." When talking about a geographic scope China trades tremendously in maritime. During this time the things China would export the most to other trading countries were, cloths, tea, silks, grain, metals and ceramics. If you jump to 2022 it is evident that things have changed. The most prominent products and goods that China trades now are "electronics, tec...

Military Bases (GEO230) Grace Knicely

Image
I decided to explore the military bases in the state California because I noticed that there are many bases in this state. There are 32 bases which includes every single military branch which is crazy! This makes perfect sense as too why there are so many because California borders the Pacific Ocean which means we need all the defense we can get on the western side of the U.S. if anything were to happen with other countries. When relating this to hegemony cycles we are straying from economic activity and focusing on military activity instead. The U.S. military is where so much of tax paying money goes to which makes them increase weaponry and bases. The United States has always been a powerful and strong country. After we took California in the 1800's from New Mexico all the U.S. did was rise to power and continue to get stronger as a nation. History is so important but the hege...

Feminist Geopolitics (GEO 230) Grace Knicely

Image
I will be exploring how feminist geopolitical women would view how the UK decided to deliver NATO supplies and conducting patrols with JEF partners for Ukraine. It is very cool to hear that countries are coming together and giving what they can in efforts to helping Ukraine due to the invasion by Russia. The Uk and Denmark are working with each other on the battleground while  Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania are delivering supplies like ships, fighter jets and military gear. A geopolitical feminist would view this as intimate politics because although Ukraine is in need, war and violence makes a huge impact on the earth we live on and people around us. "Violence is a social relation that is embedded in, and runs through, multiple spaces in a myriad of directions." I believe in this case the focus is rather on humans security rather than state which is what a Feminist would want. The role of violence though in this case with ...
